Quality Genuine Leather Manufacturing and Upholstery

Genuine leather is a luxury good. Some homeowners view leather furniture as a status symbol. Because leather is an animal product, it’s porous and remains cool to the touch. Leather wears well and becomes softer and more pliant over time. Leather furniture lasts much longer than furniture upholstered in fabric, which can tear or snag.

We have been manufacturing and upholstering high-quality leather furniture for over 30 years. As expert builders and upholsterers of quality leather sofas, leather lounge suites and leather chaise lounges, all our furniture can be made to your own specific requirements by highly-skilled craftsmen. You can choose to newly manufacture or to reupholster an existing chair, sofa or full lounge suite and it can be built the way you want.

Leather

The choice and preparation of hides is the most visible factor in leather furniture. Kosy Grant Upholsterers use natural cowhides because they provide the finest fibre structure and strength. They are also more supple and versatile. A maximum thickness of 1 to 1.3mm is ideal - any thicker makes it difficult to work with and almost impossible to deep button; any thinner and strength and the required ‘feel’ is lost.

Standard leathers for heavy domestic use are sourced in South Africa. For a plain finish the hides are buffed and any marks and scars virtually removed. Pigment is then applied to give the required colour and an even finish. Antique leathers get their appearance by further staining to the top surface, which is then gently removed in certain areas to create a two tone effect, before being finally sealed to retain the enhanced lustre. Pastel colours are usually left plain.

Buttons and Studs

Traditional leather upholstery styling usually involves deep buttoning, to give and retain shape and tension. Most buttoning work involves a fastening into the frame to a depth of 2 to 4cms. The possibility of buttons becoming loose is almost non-existent. Antique studs are used for most traditional models but brass coloured studs are offered as an alternative - or if you prefer, double piping can replace studding altogether.

Castors & Bun Feet

Kosy Grant offer a selection of feet for most ranges. Only top quality castors are used as an alternative choice to hardwood. Wooden feet can be polished to customers choice of colour: eg. Mahogany, and Oak.
